Navigating the changes to our grading system

We’re excited to announce that as of 1st June 2025 our club will be adopting the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) system. This will give us a data-driven way to determine player skill levels and provide a better grading experience for all members.

This page will explain how, why and when we're changing to DUPR, and help you to understand the steps you'll need to take to ensure you get the most out of the new system.

What's changing?

What's changing?

Why are we changing our grading system?

The transition is being driven by our club’s growth and the increasing demand for gradings. Our grading current approach has relied heavily on volunteers and has often been a thankless task due to the subjective nature of assessments, which can conflict with member expectations.

DUPR offers a more consistent and objective grading approach. Instead of judging performance in a single session, it tracks play over time to determine a skill rating.

Pickleball Australia has also adopted DUPR as its official rating system, so aligning with them will help ensure our club can easily integrate with PAA-sanctioned events.

What's going to change?

We’ll be introducing some new terminology for how we describe our current session types, so let's go through that first.

Social Sessions

These are the sessions currently run through OpenSports (as opposed to Pickleball.com).  These sessions will remain unchanged, with access controlled by the player's old grading level (Standard, Intermediate, Challenger, Advanced).

Note: Games played in Social Sessions will not affect a player’s DUPR rating if they have one.

Rated Matches

"Rated Matches" is the new name for our tournaments and league sessions we already run through Pickleball.com - and these will continue to be listed in OpenSports.  All that is changing is the name that we use to categorise them.

Access to these sessions is controlled solely by a player's DUPR rating, regardless of their old grade level, in exactly the same way they are run at the moment.  Examples include the AMC tournament and the Thursday Night League at Oxford Falls Grammar.

The old grades (Standard, Intermeidate, Challenger and Advanced) are not used to determine if someone can play in a Rated Match.

We’ll be offering plenty of Rated Match sessions for all skill levels to establish accurate DUPR ratings.

Note: Unlike Social Sessions, all Rated Match games will impact a player’s DUPR rating.

Changes in OpenSports

You'll see the Social Sessions and Rated Matches terminology starting to be used more in OpenSports over the next few weeks, and there will soon be a filter to allow members to easily select the type of game that they're interested in.

Will I still be able to play in my current social sessions?

Yes! Social Sessions are the new name for the games we currently run through OpenSports (as opposed to Pickleball.com). For now, these sessions will remain unchanged, with access controlled by the player's old grading level.

If you want to play in Social Sessions at higher skill level, you can improve your DUPR rating by playing in a Rated Match, then apply for a social grade.

What about competitive sessions?

Competitive sessions, tournaments and leagues will be collectively named as Rated Matches, these are the sessions we currently run on pickleball.com.

Access to these sessions is controlled solely by the your DUPR rating, regardless of your old or social grade.

To help members get started, we’ll offer plenty of Rated Match sessions to establish accurate DUPR ratings. NBP cannot set or modify a member’s official DUPR rating.

Note: Unlike Social Sessions, all Rated Match games will impact a player’s DUPR rating.

You first need to create your free DUPR account and then your free Pickleball.com account. If you need help setting up either account, linking to the NBP club page, or signing up for leagues or tournaments, check out our videos on our YouTube channel:

How will the new grading system work?

If you want to change your grade for social session play, instead of attending a grading session you will need to create a free DUPR account and a free Pickleball.com account, then sign up for a Rated Match on Pickleball.com.

Once your DUPR rating has changed sufficiently, and has a 100% reliability rating, you can apply for a social grade. This can be done by submitting the social grade form below.

The requirements for an upgrade are as follows:

  • Standard requires a DUPR of 2.00 - 2.49

  • Intermediate 2.50 - 2.99

  • Challenger 3.00 - 3.49

  • Advanced 3.50+

For example, an Intermediate player with a reliable DUPR rating of 3.2 would be able to move up to Challenger. This would only impact how they could access the Social Sessions as they would already be allowed to play in any Rated Match that accepted a 3.2 DUPR rating.

Entry to rated matches will be controlled by your DUPR rating, and don't need a social grade.

What is DUPR?

What is DUPR?

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is a real-time rating system that tracks your pickleball skill based on match outcomes.

It changes every time your matches are registered with DUPR.com. There are DUPR ratings for Doubles and separate DUPR ratings for singles. DUPR does not factor in age or gender. It sees each player as just a player and is purely results based.

How do I read my DUPR profile?

You can view your DUPR profile to see your rating on the DUPR website or in the app.

A DUPR profile shows two key numbers:

  • A DUPR Rating (2.000–8.000)

  • A Reliability Score (1–100%)

Initially you will be assigned a DUPR Rating of NR (not rated), but that will change after you play your rated first game with/against someone who does have a rating.

Your reliability score shows how accurate your DUPR rating is - A low reliability score means you haven't played enough games recently to have an accurate DUPR rating.

How is my DUPR calculated?

Your DUPR rating will go up when you win and down when you lose.

You can improve your DUPR by winning matches consistently, but it also takes into account:

  • Score differentials: a dominant win boosts your rating more than a close win and what goes up also comes down in the same way.

  • Your Opponents: If you are beating higher ranked players your rating will go up more than when you beat lower ranked players.

You will see bigger changes in your DUPR rating in your early games. The more you play in rated matches the more information the algorithm has to adjust your rating accordingly.

I have a high DUPR, can I apply for a new social grade?

Yes, within certain limits.

If you have a high DUPR with a 100% reliability score, and you want to play in Social Sessions above your current grade, you can apply for a temporary social grade.

  • To receive a social grade of Intermediate, you will need a DUPR of at least 2.5

  • To receive a social grade of Challenger, you will need a DUPR of at least 3.0

  • To receive a social grade of Advanced, you will need a DUPR of at least 3.5

Your social grade will have no impact on whether you can join Rated Matches as access to those sessions is already controlled purely by your DUPR rating.

What's Pickleball.com?

What is Pickleball.com?

Pickleball.com is an alternative platform to OpenSports.

It can be a bit tricky to use, and it lacks some of the features that OpenSports has, but it is the only platform that we can currently use for DUPR Ranked Matches.

Once OpenSports has the ability to record DUPR scores, we will likely go back to using that platform for all of our sessions.

We've been using it for a while with the Challenger and Advanced players, and once you get used to it it's not too bad.

To play in NBP tournaments, leagues, or Ranked Matches you'll need a Pickleball.com account linked to your DUPR profile and to our club.

To play in NBP tournaments, leagues, or Ranked Matches you'll need a Pickleball.com account linked to your DUPR profile and to our club.
