Frequently Asked Questions

Why have we changed our grading system?

The transition has been driven by our club’s growth and the increasing demand for gradings. Our previous approach to grading relied heavily on volunteers and was often a thankless task due to the subjective nature of assessments, which could conflict with member expectations.

DUPR offers a more consistent and objective grading approach. Instead of judging performance in a single session, it tracks play over time to determine a skill rating.

Pickleball Australia has also adopted DUPR as its official rating system, so aligning with them will help ensure our club can easily integrate with PAA-sanctioned events.

What's changed?

There's some new terminology for how we describe our current session types, so let's go through that first.

Social Sessions

These are the sessions currently run through OpenSports (as opposed to Pickleball.com).  These sessions will remain unchanged, with access controlled by the player's old grading level (Standard, Intermediate, Challenger, Advanced).

Note: Games played in Social Sessions will not affect a player’s DUPR rating if they have one.

DUPR Rated Leagues

"DUPR Rated Leagues" is the new name for our tournaments and leagues we've been running through Pickleball.com - and these will continue to be listed in OpenSports.  All that has changed is the name that we use to categorise them.

Access to these sessions is controlled solely by a player's DUPR rating, regardless of their old grade level, in exactly the same way they are run at the moment.

The old grades (Standard, Intermediate, Challenger and Advanced) are not used to determine if someone can play in a DUPR Rated League.

We’ll be offering plenty of DUPR Rated Leagues for all skill levels to establish accurate DUPR ratings.

Note: Unlike Social Sessions, all DUPR Rated League session will impact a player’s DUPR rating.

How does the new grading system work?

If you want to change your grade for social session play, you will need to create a free Pickleball.com account, then sign up for a DUPR Rated League, and then opt into the next available session.

Once your DUPR rating has changed sufficiently, and has a 100% reliability score, you can apply for a social grade. This can be done by submitting the social grade form below.

The DUPR rating requirements for an upgrade are as follows:

  • Standard 2.00 - 2.49

  • Intermediate 2.50 - 2.99

  • Challenger 3.00 - 3.49

  • Advanced 3.50+

For example, an Intermediate player with a reliable DUPR rating of 3.2 would be able to move up to Challenger. This would only impact how they could access the Social Sessions as they would already be allowed to play in any DUPR Rated Leagues that accepted a 3.2 DUPR rating.

Entry to DUPR Rated Leagues and sessions will be controlled by your DUPR rating, and doesn't require a social grade.

You can view your DUPR profile to see your rating on the DUPR website or in the app.

A DUPR profile shows two key numbers:

  • A DUPR Rating (2.000–8.000)

  • A Reliability Score (1–100%)

Initially you will be assigned a DUPR Rating of NR (not rated), but that will change after you play your rated first game with/against someone who does have a rating.

Your reliability score shows how accurate your DUPR rating is - A low reliability score means you haven't played enough games recently to have an accurate DUPR rating.

How do I read my DUPR profile?

You can view your DUPR profile to see your rating on the DUPR website or in the app.

A DUPR profile shows two key numbers:

I have a high DUPR. Can I apply for a new social grade?

Yes, within certain limits.

If you have a high DUPR with a 100% reliability score, and you want to play in Social Sessions above your current grade, you can apply for a new social grade.

  • For Intermediate, you will need a DUPR between 2.5 - 2.99

  • For Challenger, you will need a DUPR between 3.0 - 3.49

  • For Advanced, you will need a DUPR of at least 3.5

Your social grade will have no impact on whether you can join a DUPR Rated League as access to those sessions is controlled purely by your DUPR rating.

You can apply for social grade by filling out the social grade form above.

How are DUPR sessions played?

There are 4 different playing formats that hosts may choose to run for their DUPR Leagues:

  1. DUPR Rating

    1. A group of players will play each other in a single round or for 2 rounds, depending upon the number of players in that session

    2. This is the preferred format for the Thursday 3.0 Slam session

  2. Up / Down

    1. 1 up / down or 2 up / down

    2. After round 1 is completed, the system will create new groups & matches based on the up/down choice for the league, as well as the players’ performance in round 1

  3. DUPR Rating + Up / Down

    1. This is a hybrid approach where the entire playing group is seeded by their DUPR rating

    2. In the first round, you will play against players closest to your DUPR rating, and in round 2 the system will re-organise the groups to play up/down based on each player’s round 1 performance.

    3. 2 up/down is the preferred format for the Saturday Women’s 2.00-2.99 & 3.0+ sessions

  4. Percentage of Points (POP)

    1. The system will create groups & matches based on players’ performance (wins, % of points earned from the previous week’s results)

    2. Players that have a higher POP performance will move up the ladder, but players that have a low POP will drop down the ladder from session to session.

If you want to find out what type of format a DUPR league is played in, you can contact the host via the OpenSports chat for that league.

Pickleball.com FAQs

What is Pickleball.com?

Pickleball.com is an alternative platform to OpenSports.

It can be a bit tricky to use, and it lacks some of the features that OpenSports has, but it is the only platform that we can currently use for DUPR Rated Leagues.

Once OpenSports has the ability to record DUPR scores, we will likely go back to using that platform for all of our sessions.

We've been using it for a while with the Challenger and Advanced players, and once you get used to it it's not too bad.

To play in NBP tournaments or leagues, you'll need a Pickleball.com account linked to your DUPR profile and to our club.
